Northampton Council steps up food safety check campaign

Council food safety officers have been carrying out extra checks on butchers and caterers around the town in the wake of updated guidance issued by the Food Standards Agency in November 2011.

As well as carrying out general hygiene and food safety checks on the premises, officers are paying particular attention to the use of complex equipment such as meat slicers and vacuum packers that have been implicated in recent E-coli outbreaks
 
In line with the guidance premises are being checked to make sure that they are not using machines for both raw and cooked or ready to eat foods as this poses a risk to public health as a result of cross contamination with E-coli.
 
If any premises are found to be in breach of food safety regulations they will be served with an immediate Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice which may prohibit them from using the equipment, carrying out certain activities and if appropriate close the premises.  An application will then be made to the courts within three working days for a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Order confirming the prohibition, which if breached could lead to prosecution and up to two years imprisonment.

Councillor John Caswell, Northampton Borough Council cabinet member for environmental health, said: "Our food safety officers carry out regular checks on all food premises to ensure the public is protected and that high standards are maintained.  These inspections are ongoing and we take action against any premises that fail in their duty to their customers."
 
The council is urging any business that is unsure of their obligations or wanting advice to call its public protection division on 0300 330 7000.  Members of the public who may be concerned about a particular premises are also urged to get in touch.
